Join BYL in Support of a Good Cause - Help Cure World Blindness

Bikram Yoga Canary Wharf student and practising optician Sarah King is embarking on a challenge of her own in order to raise money for Fight for Sight, U.K.’s largest charity dedicated to funding eye research. This October she will be embarking on a trek in the Sahara, walking approx 15-20 km per day, braving sandstorms, scorpions and heat up to 57 degrees Celsius, and needs to raise £1300 to meet her goal. In support of this cause, the Canary Wharf studio will make a donation on World Sight Day, 13 October. If you also wish to donate please visit http://www.justgiving.com/sarah-king3.

Guest Teachers in April & May

2006 World Yoga Asana Champion and senior teacher Ashley Hooper taught a special class in Canary Wharf on 4 April and even performed a number of her winning postures during an after-class demo session. In addition to many of our regular students, the class had two former World Champions and the current Men’s U.K. Champion in attendance!

Ashley found Bikram yoga in her teenage years and graduated from teacher training in 2002 at the tender age of 17 with special permission from Bikram. She competed and medaled at several World Asana Championships before finally emerging as the World Yoga Champion in 2006. She now owns a Bikram studio in Washington state. Her class is one of the finest you will ever take.

Senior teacher Marc Mead has come to Canary Wharf from Singapore to train with Ky for the International Asana Championship Finals in the U.S. on 18/19 June. He will teach Thursday 8 pm classes at the studio throughout May. His class is inspirational, passionate and, well, tough. Come and check it out.

U.K. Yoga Asana Championships Were a Huge Success!

The U.K. Championships were held on March 26 with 30 competitors vying for the Men’s & Women’s titles. Several competitors from Canary Wharf participated, including our teachers Sindy Haque, Alexis Vickers, Michael Eley (emerging as the Men’s UK Champion!) and student Elsa Krenn. It may be inspiring to learn that many of the competitors took their very first Bikram class within the past 3 years.

Michael will represent the U.K. in the International Yoga Asana Championships held on 18 and 19 June in Los Angeles, USA. We would like to wish him luck! The event (as well as videos of last year’s winners) can be watched live at http://yogacup.com/.

Bikram’s Recent London Lecture Drew Large Audience

Bikram’s very first visit to London on 8 April was quite an event, a unique chance to see and hear Bikram Choudhury, the charismatic founder of Bikram Yoga, and learn more about his philosophy and way of life. He spoke for 3 straight hours about his extraordinary life and the yoga, which has inspired, challenged, motivated and healed so many people around the world.

Bikram developed his style of hot Hatha yoga some 40 years ago starting with a small studio in San Francisco – the same studio at which Conny started her teaching career – before moving to L.A. to teach celebrities, professional athletes, politicians and anyone who wanted to learn his yoga. After he started his first teacher training course in 1994, Bikram Yoga studios started opening across the U.S. Today, Bikram’s yoga has spread to 5 continents with approximately 700 studios around the world, from Chile to Morocco, from Finland to Indonesia.

We would like to extend a special thanks to all the London studios who pulled together to make this event happen. Over 600 people attended, and undoubtedly most attendees came away inspired and certainly entertained!

Feb 5 Seminar and Master Class with Ky Ha Proved a Hit among Participants

Part 2 of the Seminar and Master Class with 2007 Yoga World Champion Ky was held on 5 February with focus on the Floor Series. The relaxed atmosphere encouraged everyone to ask questions at any time, demonstrate postures and get hands-on corrections. Participants were surprised how much further they could go in individual postures with a little help and guidance from Ky. It was very beneficial to students hearing technical explanations, learning about the medical benefits of postures and seeing other students struggle with similar issues. Students enjoyed watching the advanced version of some postures showing them how much further a posture can be developed. Students came away with a wealth of knowledge, truly inspired and motivated to take their practice to the next level.

Thank you to all participants for the large number of positive feedback emails. Yes, we will do more of these seminars.
See what students who attended Part 2 had to say down below. For Ky’s background and bio, go to http://www.bikramyogalondon.com/teachers.html

"This is the first seminar I've attended and I will certainly be making every effort to sign up for future events. From the start, the relaxed atmosphere encouraged everyone to feel they could ask questions at any time, or gain guidance with particular issues as we progressed through the floor series.Having each postureexplained from a theoretical/beneficial aspect whilst watching the pose performed in practice really helped emphasise the importance of trying to execute each posture with correct alignment. It was also uplifting to see people improve in the different posesunder the correction and guidance of Ky. Makes you believe you too can achieve 'the seemingly impossible'."

"We all worked extremely hard, but I also had tremendous fun. It gave me the opportunity to share and discuss experiences with other participants, many of whom I see in regular class but don't get the opportunity to meet."

"I found the technical explanations and demonstrations to be very helpful in terms of finding improvements in my postures. Also, Ky's style of teaching is very friendly and inclusive, but certainly intense, so that helps. He made the time fly by - I had no idea we would actually use almost 3 hours on the floor series! I would definitely attend another seminar."

"I found the master class / seminar very informative, and it was encouraging to see that the challenges I find in some postures are experienced by others in the class. I enjoyed Ky's hands-on approach in that he took the time to demonstrate the postures and also showcased the advanced version of the postures showing us how much further a posture can be enhanced or grown. I look forward to future master classes as I found it a beneficial learning experience.Thank you."

"Ky is a wonderful teacher, and his knowledge of the postures and the human body is unsurpassed. I learnt a lot from the session and was able to advance one of my postures due to the discoveries made."

"The size of the class was perfect for a positive feedback session allowing everyone to discuss difficulties and postures. This Class has differently improved my practise, I began attending Bikram to clear my mind of thought, and slowly but surely the balance, and strength has all come together."

Master Class & Seminar with 2007 World Yoga Champion and Senior Teacher Ky Ha proved hugely popular!

The November Master Class & Seminar with Ky Ha proved to be a big hit with all participants, from beginners to advanced. The event kicked off with a 2-hour Master Class focusing particularly on the floor series, which gave students the opportunity to learn more about floor postures and receive adjustments. After a 30 min break, the Seminar explored every posture in the Standing Series in great detail. Students demonstrated their postures and received hands on evaluation in a group setting. Everybody had the opportunity to ask questions and watch Ky demonstrate his amazing postures. Students came away with a wealth of knowledge, truly inspired and motivated to take their practice to the next level. In fact, so many students asked about Part 2 that day that we decided on the spot to schedule a new Seminar early next year. For Ky’s background and bio, go to http://www.bikramyogalondon.com/teachers.html.

“I loved the structure of the seminar where Ky had people coming up to demonstrate and for yogis to volunteer to have their postures corrected. It was a very supportive environment and I think that helped to get everyone comfortable and willing to share and participate. I received clarity on some of my postures and even discovered that I could advance further in my poses which I would never have realised if Ky did not point that out."

"I recommend everyone to at least attend a Master Class if possible as the benefits that you reap out of it cannot be measured! Not only do you improve your practise, you make friends along the way. It was so great to have Ky teaching, as he is a bundle of knowledge, sharing his own experiences and keeping us entertained with his humour throughout the whole time. I can’t wait for Part 2 of the Seminar and will definitely be there to sign up!”
Kay

“Thanks for organising yesterday's master class. It was very valuable, and I have been motivated to fine tune my practice as a result of my participation. I thoroughly enjoyed Ky's instruction. He is very professional yet fun and he explains things simply and gives us goals to reach which I appreciate. His passion and commitment to Bikram is inspiring and commendable. It was also good to spend a day with like-minded yogis!”

Join Bikram Yoga London in supporting the Yoga Junkies 2010 Team as they raise money for the Rainforest Foundation!

The Yoga Junkies 2010 Team is taking part in London Yogathon 2010 at London Olympia and is looking for your help!

On 30 October 2010, a Team of six will endeavor to complete 108 Surya Namaskaras (Sun Salutations)
in a single session. A Surya Namaskara is an energising and healing sequence of yoga asanas (postures), pranayamas (breathing techniques), mantra and meditation techniques. Completing all 108 Sun Salutations will prove an exhausting challenge, and they are hoping to raise at least £648 for completing the Yogathon
(£1 for each Sun Salutation).

While this is mercifully not performed in the hot room, the effort required has been known to make experienced yogis and yoga teachers alike quake, particularly as they approach the 100 Sun Salutation mark!

In this year's Yogathon, the team is supporting The Rainforest Foundation, a registered charity which tackles deforestation locally and globally. Locally, it helps forest communities to gain land rights, challenge logging companies and manage forests for their own wellbeing and protection of their environment. Globally, it campaigns to influence national and international laws to protect rainforests and their inhabitants. For more information on the Foundation, please visit: http://www.rainforestfoundationuk.org.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and secure and you'll never receive unwanted emails. Once you donate, JustGiving will send your money directly to the charity and will also ensure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a U.K. taxpayer. It’s the most efficient way to donate.

To help support the Yoga Junkies 2010 Team in this worthwhile effort please visit the fundraising link http://www.justgiving.com/yoga-junkies-2010.

Thank you!

Posture Clinic, 19 June 2010

Our first posture clinic held on 19 June was a great success, with students leaving inspired, motivated and with a wealth of newly acquired knowledge. Senior teacher Sam (picture) led the class explaining and demonstrating 6 key postures and 2 breathing exercises from Bikram’s Beginners series. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and get their postures corrected. Many participants took the opportunity to take the class immediately after allowing them to put their new knowledge into practice.

“I came to the postures clinic you held yesterday at the Canary Wharf Bikram studio and I just wanted to let you know how beneficial I found it. Thank you so much for all the really valuable insights and tips you shared, I know my practice will greatly improve once I apply what I have learnt, looking forward to it! I really took so much from the meditation at the end, I carried that gratitude with me for the rest of the day! Inspirational!”
Tess

“I really really enjoyed the posture class and found it helpful. Just having an opportunity to ask all those questions that come up whilst you're doing a posture and are then forgotten until you do it the next time!!! I was able to do the 5pm class afterwards and it was great to put things into practice.
I found physically trying things out really helpful in the clinic, it kind of cemented the info I was taking in. It was also helpful to see the advanced postures and learn how the postures lead on. Look forwards to learning about some other postures in the next clinic!!!!!”

Anna

The posture clinic was really good, I liked the following:
- Two senior teachers to help, correct and advise
- The background to the 6 postures and what helps to support internal organs

30-Day Challenge Yoga Marathon

On May 1, we kick started Bikram Yoga Canary Wharf’s first 30-Day Challenge with over 30 eager participants. After 30 consecutive days of blood, sweat and fun, 20 students successfully completed – that’s why it’s called “challenge” – and proudly displayed their new “I Did It!”
T-shirts. The challenge was a great way of improving everyone’s practice, getting to know other fellow students and making new friends. In fact, the interest in the next 30-Day Challenge has been so great that we will do another one in October.
